L4L Teams Up with Top Lung Cancer Researchers

On Sunday, March 24th, 2013 Living For Liz is hosting a THANK YOU event.  The goal??  To thank YOU for all of the incredible support given to us over the past year in making Elizabeth’s dream become a reality.  We would also like to update you on our future plans, as well as promote the efforts of the La Crosse area groups that we admire.  So we have teamed up with local heath facilities and area groups to promote the latest in cancer research and healthy living.  And we are THRILLED to  announce that we will have THREE world-class lung cancer researchers at the event: Dr. Carl Simon Shelley of Gundersen Lutheran, La Crosse and Dr. Ping Yang & Dr. Julian R. Molina of Mayo Clinic, Rochester.

Dr. Carl Simon Shelley– Director, Hematology/Oncology at Gundersen Lutheran, La Crosse
Dr. Carl Simon Shelley’s research strives to understand the fundamental biologic principles and identify new therapeutic targets that can be used in the fight against an array of pathologies. His research is aimed at determining the basic molecular mechanisms that control cancer cell adhesion such that therapeutic targets can be developed. His laboratory’s recent experiments have focused on suppressing a specific protein component of cellular membrane coverings that functions like Teflon. This covering deflects attacks on the cancer by national killer cells, thus allowing the cancer to grow.

Dr. Ping Yang’s primary appointment at Mayo Clinic is in health sciences research. She also holds a joint clinical appointment in Medical Genetics and Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. She is an epidemiologist with special training and experience in genetic epidemiology. Her long standing research interest has been in the causes and outcomes of lung cancer. Dr. Yang is leading three NIH R01 grants and co-leading three other NIH grants, investigating the causes, prevention and treatment of lung cancer. In 1997, she initiated and has since been leading the Epidemiology and Genetics of Lung Cancer research program.  Click here to read more.

Dr. Julian R. Molina has 27 years of experience in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Hematology & Oncology and currently practices at Mayo Clinic, Rochester.  His three main areas of interest are: drug development/phase I clinical trials, lung cancer and head and neck malignancies including thyroid cancer.

So please join us this Sunday, along side groups such as Team Vogel, Hope Lives and the American Cancer Society who will showcase resources available to cancer patients. Marti Runyon of Mayo Clinic and Dr. Carl Simon Shelley of Gundersen Lutheran will be speaking at the event.  Also present will be Miss Wisconsin’s platform, “Kate’s Cupboard”. Kate, Elizabeth’s cousin, shares L4L’s passion for a healthy lifestyle by promoting healthy eating… please bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the cupboard!

L4L is serious about fighting lung cancer.  And we hope you are too!  Lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths in men and women in the United States and throughout the world, is the least funded among all major cancers.  Let’s show three of the top lung cancer researchers that we are a force to reckon with; that we are out to change the face of lung cancer once and for all!  And of course, don’t miss out on your chance to sample L4L’s very own GREEN DRINK!  Thank YOU for all of the incredible support given to us over the past year.  We will see you Sunday!   <3 L4L
