Let’s Have a Look at You

Assessment Time-  It is honesty time; time to come clean about what you have been or maybe have not been doing.

So let’s paint a possible picture.  You may have been an athlete in your younger days (football, illness soccer, sick swimming, ambulance baseball). Whatever it was, it is something you haven’t kept up with. Or you have seen a huge decline in the time you have spent doing these activities. Now you are skipping meals and eating more processed foods because it is easier and maybe cheaper.  Your daily routine is: work, home, relax and repeat…. all week long. The weekend is golfing with friends (riding a cart of course, and this is what you are going to call exercise). Monday rolls around and you repeat the all too familiar cycle.

Any of the above scenarios sound familiar? Maybe not exactly, but even a small part of any one of those scenarios without changes can get you into trouble.  Take a look in the mirror… are you in trouble?

What are you going to do about it?

Americans spend millions of dollars on the next weight loss craze, the next piece of exercise equipment or the newest fad diet guaranteed to shed those ugly extra pounds in a short amount of time and make you a lean with a super model body.  What usually happens is the new diet works temporarily.  You lose 10 pounds, but then all that weight comes back… and then some. The new piece of equipment has become a fancy coat rack, and your body has not changed.

Over the years I have come to realize there is a magic formula, and by using it, you can beat the overweight and out of shape blob you see in the mirror. It is really simple; so simple that you will say, “That’s not going to work, it’s too simple.  There has to be a catch.”

Here is the simple mathematical equation: Calories taken in, minus calories burned will equal either weight gain or loss.  It is that simple. If you eat 4,000 calories in a day, and your lifestyle in that day only burns 3000 calories, you have a surplus of 1000 calories. If this occurs on a daily basis, overtime you will gain weight. No ifs or buts, this is the end of the discussion. However, if you consume 4000 calories daily, and you are active in your daily routine and burn 4500-5000 calories a day, you will have a deficit of 500-1000 calories a day, and you will see a weight loss over time. Those are the facts. Which equation outcome do you want?  If there is a catch, this is it:  YOU are the one that decides which equation to follow and how to implement it.

“Come on” you say, “is it that simple?” Yes, but unfortunately you are going to complicate it. You will try and cheat on the math quiz. “Well if I eat only one meal a day and make sure it is less than what I burn in a regular day of living, then I win, and I will lose weight.”  Sorry, you will fail, and you will be right back where you started. And I will tell you why later. Sorry to say, it is not straight math when dealing with a complicated and amazing machine like the human body.

But you said it was simple!

I said the equation to weight loss was simple, and it is. Implementing it can be easy too, but it is not easy to fight against years of destructive bad habits created by non-other than yourself.  “It’s not my fault; I am only a product of my environment.” Stop right there and back the truck up. Don’t go blaming others and the environment for your own short falls. There is enough of that going around already. Let’s concentrate on what can be done for you and your current physical condition. That image in the mirror is you; you own it, and it is all yours to change.  Trust me, no one else is going to do it for you, and you shouldn’t expect that either.  It is really up to you.

Imagine if you will the marbled fat laden meat on the left.  Imagine that is fat on a human’s body, not only under the surface of the skin of the belly, hips and thighs but all throughout the body.   Our goal is to start moving toward the picture on the right and have the body erase the fat and make a leaner you.
